There’s been a lot of talk about the new CX-90 in the last few years, a model that would succeed the current CX-9. According to the latest reports, that model will arrive in 2024 and it will bring all kinds of upgrades, starting from new inline-six units, longitudinally-mounted engines etc. However, it looks like the Japanese manufacturer is about to do the same thing as with the CX-5, which means that the current CX-9 won’t be discontinued immediately after CX-90’s arrival. Instead, it will remain in production for some more time. That indicates that the 2024 Mazda CX-9 is about to feature a familiar design, without more notable changes.
We expect to see a familiar SUV, which may be older than most competitors but still has a lot of great things to offer. We like its styling, as well as the cabin layout. Furthermore, the ride is pretty engaging, while driving dynamics are great. As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the launch date will be scheduled for the last quarter of 2023.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Design
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will most likely be one of the final production years of the current generation. Therefore, it’s hard to expect any notable changes. Instead, we count on a familiar design, which hasn’t changed significantly since its initial launch in 2016. The vehicle is based on a SkyActive platform and features KODO design language, which is more than relevant even today.
The outgoing model is characterized by a stylish exterior but it also offers great ride quality. Driving manners are typical for Mazda, with engaging handling and a lot of sportiness, which is something other SUVs in this segment don’t offer.
Besides the stylish exterior, the CX-9 also offers a stylish exterior and the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will continue in the same way. We will see the same cabin layout, which combines high-quality, soft-touch materials with a lot of attention to detail and elegant aesthetics. That’s something you will hardly get from any other SUV in the class, so it’s no wonder that Mazda’s interior is usually compared with premium players.
Still, not all things are great about this interior. For example, the third row of seats is pretty tight, and less spacious than most rivals, while the same can be said for the cargo area, which won’t impress you with volume. On the other hand, the first two rows of seats are spacious and comfortable, very good for long journeys.
Since we are talking about one of the final production years, it’s hard to believe that Mazda could bring significant novelties in terms of standard and available equipment. Therefore, all models should come standard with goodies like a 10.25-inch display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker stereo, four USB ports, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, wireless device charging, tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener and a moonroof. Among upgrades, you can find things like ambient lighting, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, satellite radio, two third-row USB ports and navigation.
In terms of safety, all models will come standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams etc. Among upgrades, expect to find things like a head-up display, traffic sign recognition, surround-view camera, parking sensors, reverse automatic emergency braking etc.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Engine
The 2024 Mazda CX-9 will continue with a familiar 2.5-liter turbo-four, which puts out 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque on regular fuel. If you use premium fuel, the max output goes up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty enough for pretty good driving dynamics. The engine feels pretty refined, while we also like the 6-speed automatic transmission, which is smooth and pretty quick.
When properly equipped, this mid-size SUV can tow up to 3.500 pounds, which is below average for the segment.
When it comes to fuel economy, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will offer the same figures as the current model, which is good for about 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. That’s quite good for a mid-size SUV, especially if we consider the standard all-wheel drive.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Release Date and Price
We presume that the 2024 Mazda CX-9 will arrive sometime in the last quarter of 2023, with a starting price of around 39.000 dollars. The competition remains the same, primarily in the form of models like Nissan Pathfinder, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride etc.
