Sometimes by the end of the next year, the carmaker should present its all-new 2019 Ford Kuga model. The newest Kuga has been caught during its testing and at first glance, we could notice that it will share some similar design cues with the new Ford Focus. However, that is not all. The Kuga will be based on the entirely new architecture, the same one which will be used in the Focus. As well, thanks to the new platform, the Kuga will arrive with improved interior space so as the aerodynamic and fuel efficiency. Moreover, it is going to be offered with the new petrol unit and a plug-in hybrid engine for the first time.
Engine and performance of the 2019 Ford Kuga
Expect the same engines which power the current model to be found in the newest 2019 Ford Kuga. However, alongside the three traditional engines, the Kuga will finally arrive with a plug-in hybrid engine for the first time.
The base unit will be a 2.5-liter inline-4 which can make 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel drive system is standard and the only option for this unit. However, all the engines will work with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This one gets 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
The next is a 1.5-liter inline-4 turbocharged EcoBoost engine. This unit has the output of 179 hp and 177 pound-feet of torque. This unit is available on SE and SEL models and comes with a choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. The FWD model gets 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Connected to all wheels, it is rated at 22/28 mpg.
The last option is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 powertrain. It is able to deliver 245 hp and the torque of 275 pound-feet. This engine is standard in the Titanium model and can tow up to 3,500 pounds. As for the fuel economy, it is estimated to be 21/28 mpg with front-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive model gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Finally, the all-new 2019 Ford Kuga will be available with a plug-in hybrid engine for the first time. This variant should combine a 3-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and an electric motor of 88 kWh. Furthermore, the carmaker will also offer the most powerful RS version in the Kuga lineup which will use a 2.0-liter petrol unit which will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system. The total output of this engine will be close to 300 horsepower.
Exterior design and platform
The all-new 2019 Ford Kuga will be moved to the new C platform which will also be used in the newest Focus model. This means that it will be lighter, more dynamic, and more economical. As well, the new architecture should also provide more interior space.
In the terms of exterior design, the 2019 Ford Kuga will also be revised and judging by the spy photos, it seems at the Kuga has adopted the all-new design language. And will borrow some styling cues from the new Ford Focus. It will now look sharper and will feature a larger body. As well, the Kuga will now get the same shape of the tailgate from the Focus model, and so as the tail lamps.
The interior design of the 2019 Ford Kuga
Inside, the 2019 Ford Kuga is going to be more spacious than before since it is now moved to the new platform. So, it will provide more comfort for all the occupants. The rear seat passengers will now get more space and the seats should be movable if needed more legroom. It will also be slightly revised with more horizontally designed dashboard and the new tablet-like infotainment screen placed at the top of the center console. Furthermore, we expect more quality and soft-touch materials and more leather.
The base equipment of the 2019 Ford Kuga will include power features, air conditioning, a rearview camera, cruise control, AM/FM/CD player with 6 speakers, the Ford’s Sync infotainment system with 4.2-inch screen, Bluetooth, voice recognition, 6-way adjustable driver’s seat, and cloth upholstery. The mid-range models will add satellite radio, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, keypad entry, a power driver seat, rear parking sensors, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with the infotainment system, leather upholstery, and a power tailgate. The range-topping models will also get keyless ignition, ambient lighting, Sony audio system with 12 speakers, LED signature lighting, blind-spot monitors, rear park assist, navigation, and a power passenger seat. A panoramic roof, automatic park assist, remote start, and a towing package will be optional.
Release date and price of the 2019 Ford Kuga
The 2019 Ford Kuga is set to go on sale sometime by the end of 2019. The price is not yet revealed to the public. However, the current model begins at around $24,900.
