2025 Honda CR-V: Could We See New Transmission?

Honda’s popular compact SUV has just been redesigned and just like it was expected, it came mostly with evolutionary changes, considering that the previous model was already a pretty amazing vehicle. The new model just improved those minor weak spots and once again, the CR-V is among the best models in the class. Does this mean that the Japanese carmaker is done with the updates? Well, it looks like the novelties will continue coming in the following years, particularly with the 2025 Honda CR-V, which is expected to bring a couple of important upgrades.

This particularly refers to things under the hood. Namely, the new model is great in many aspects, so the overall design definitely won’t change. On the other hand, rumors suggest we could see a new transmission on offer. Moreover, some sources even speculate about a plug-in hybrid version, though the actual chances for such a model aren’t too big.

In any case, we expect that the 2025 Honda CR-V will hit the market sometime in the second half of 2024.

2025 Honda CR-V Transmission and Powertrain Upgrades

The 2025 Honda CR-V will represent the third production year of the new generation and, therefore, it will be too early for bigger changes regarding the overall design, things like styling, interior layout etc. On the other hand, rumors suggest a new transmission. Namely, the biggest drawback of the current model is its CVT gearbox. Not that it is bad or something like that, but these kinds of transmissions are a little bit uninspiring when it comes to the driving experience, so we could say that a more engaging gearbox is the only thing that the new model needs to be perfect.

That’s why there are reports about the 2025 Honda CR-V getting a new, 10-speed automatic transmission. It will certainly improve the driving experience and we have no doubt it would come coupled with a turbo-four. On the other hand, we are not sure about the hybrid version.

Speaking of the hybrid version, there are also rumors about the new, plug-in hybrid setup, which would feature a layout based on a turbo-four, with around 300 horsepower and decent autonomy. Of course, it would compete with the RAV4 Prime, but we still think that the actual chances to see it are minimal.

2025 Honda CR-V Engines

With the new transmission or not, the 2025 Honda CR-V will carry on with two familiar powertrain options. Base models will continue with a 1.5-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque, which is the amount of power that ensures adequate performance. There is also a hybrid version, which combines a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with two electric motors, for a total output of 204 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque.

Fuel Economy

The new transmission may change the ratings a little bit but we are pretty sure that the numbers wouldn’t be much different compared to the current model. The current model, equipped with a turbo-four engine, is good for about 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which is pretty impressive for a compact SUV. The hybrid is even better and returns around 43 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

2025 Honda CR-V Design

While updates under the hood are possible, the rest of the design should remain pretty much the same. Simply, this will be the third production year of the generation, so it’s still early for a mid-cycle refresh. We count on the same aesthetics, which look bolder and more mature compared to the previous generation. We also count on the same driving manners, which are well-balanced and offer a good mix of comfort and athleticism.

The same thing is with the interior design, which will continue with an elegant dashboard and a fair amount of standard and available equipment. Moreover, the cabin is really spacious and offers a couple of very comfortable rows of seats, which both accommodate adults with ease. Furthermore, the cargo area is among the biggest in the class, with 39.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 76.5 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.

Features

Of course, novelties in terms of standard equipment are also possible, though the current model already stands pretty well in this aspect. The base versions come standard with goodies like a 7-inch touch screen, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, remote keyless entry and a moonroof.

2025 Honda CR-V Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2025 Honda CR-V will arrive sometime in the second half of the year, with a starting price of around 30.000 dollars. Models like Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester will remain key competitors.
