The Blue Oval Company is currently in a quite tricky position. On one hand, the Edge is old, some would even say outdated and it is planned to leave room for the production of electric cars in the future. However, it still makes pretty good sales numbers and brings a lot of money to the company. That’s why the company decided to carry on with this SUV, but not in North America. Unfortunately, the U.S. model will be discontinued after the 2024 model year, while the new version has already been presented for the Chinese market.
Therefore, the 2024 Ford Edge will show its dual nature. The US model will carry on in the same way, with familiar design characteristics. It offers potent engines, lots of standard equipment, and generous cabin space. On the other hand, the Chinese market model will bring a new design, along with a new hybrid powertrain.
2024 Ford Edge Design
So, the 2024 Ford Edge will represent the final production year in North America, which indicates that there will be no significant changes. The overall design will remain the same. It’s been around for almost a decade, but there were a couple of important updates, in 2019 and 2021. The current model still looks modern and attractive, so there is no doubt that the next year’s model is about to bring a familiar look.
On the other hand, the Chinese market version looks way more modern. It sports a completely new design language, which doesn’t have much in common with Ford’s models sold in North America. This model looks bolder and more mature, while the front end is characterized by a pretty unique grille and headlight design. Another thing worth mentioning is that the Chinese version is also notably bigger, with a 4.8-inch longer wheelbase than the U.S. model.
Interior
When it comes to interior design, we still haven’t had a chance to see what the Chinese version looks like. On the other hand, the U.S. model will carry on in the same way, with a familiar design that’s been updated a few years ago. There is a massive infotainment screen available, and the materials are mostly nice and soft to the touch. Everything feels assembled pretty well and we could say that the cabin doesn’t show its age all that much at all.
Also, there is a pretty generous amount of passenger space. Although a mid-size SUV, the Edge features just two rows, which means that there are no compromises in terms of legroom. Both accommodate adults with ease, and the cargo area is also pretty generous. It offers around 39.2 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 73.4, which is good for a two-row mid-size crossover.
Features
Details about the Chinese market version are still unavailable. On the other hand, the North American model is about to carry on in the same way, with familiar standards and available equipment. We expect that base models are about to continue with goodies like a 12-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control and proximity keyless entry.
Among upgrades, expect to find things like navigation, wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, remote start, ambient LED interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 110-volt household-style power outlet, a universal garage door opener, and a panoramic sunroof.
When it comes to safety, all models should come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keeps assist, automatic high beams, etc.
2024 Ford Edge Engines
The new Chinese market version will come with a new hybrid setup. It is a system that combines a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, for a total output of 271 horsepower.
On the other hand, models in North America will carry on with two familiar powertrain options. Base models will continue with a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 250 horsepower and offers pretty good overall performance. For those who look for something even peppier, there is an even more impressive turbo V6, which puts out 335 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard on all models, while it’s also good to know that the base turbo-four comes coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy
While details for the average fuel economy of the new hybrid model are still unavailable, the U.S.-market powertrains will offer familiar ratings. The base turbo-four is good for about 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for the class. Models with V6 are a little bit thirstier but still average for the class, returning around 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
2024 Ford Edge Release Date and Price
The Chinese market version will debut sometime this year, probably in the summer. On the other hand, the 2024 Ford Edge will be the final production year in North America, so we expect to see it sometime in the last quarter of the year.
