The new generation of VW’s compact crossover is on the way and we expect it will hit the market in the second half of the year. So far, the test mule has been spotted several times and while some previous appearances were with heavy camouflage, the latest version wears just a white cover, which lets us see much more in terms of aesthetics. The 2024 VW Tiguan is about to bring a completely new look but that won’t be the only significant change compared to the outgoing generation.
We also expect to see a completely new cabin, the most spacious and more upscale. We already know that the new infotainment system is on the way, more advanced and more intuitive. Also, the test mule seems to feature slightly bigger dimensions, even though the wheelbase will probably remain the same. The mechanical changes will also be evolutionary, especially in terms of the platform, while the engine lineup will probably be updated with some sort of electrification.
2024 VW Tiguan Design
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 VW Tiguan is about to receive a full redesign. At this point, we know for sure that mechanical changes will be rather evolutionary. The new model will continue to ride on a familiar MQB platform. So, despite notable updates, the overall layout will remain the same, with a transversally mounted engine and front-wheel drive. Of course, upgrades and updates are expected in terms of the chassis and suspension setup, which should improve the ride quality, even though the current model stands pretty well in this aspect.
Of curse, the new generation will bring new exterior design. At this point, the test mule still wears camouflage, but the latest iteration is white and shows a bit of the overall shape and some basic design solutions. The company engineers did a nice job of hiding key design elements, especially at the front. On the other hand, we can clearly see that the overall shape feels less boxy and less aggressive than before. The new generation insists on elegance and also seems to feature bigger dimensions.
Speaking of dimensions, the new generation will probably feature a bigger overall size, while the wheelbase will probably remain the same. In North America, this means highly under 110 inches between the axles, while the rest of the world also has a choice of the standard-wheelbase version with 105.6 inches between the axles.
Besides the new exterior design, the 2024 VW Tiguan will also get a new interior design. Of course, one of the logical moves would be to take inspiration from the Golf Mk8, while some other sources suggest a little bit different design approach. According to them, the company won’t give up on its typically conservative aesthetical approach and the latest photos show an infotainment screen that’s not so strictly integrated into the dashboard anymore. Instead, it is positioned slightly higher and features a bit of a floating design.
Considering that the new model will probably feature slightly bigger dimensions, we presume there will be more passenger space as well. Standard models will feature two rows of seats and accommodate adults with ease. On the other hand, the third row should be optional. Given the bigger dimensions, the cargo area could only become bigger, even though the current model is already pretty impressive in this aspect.
2024 VW Tiguan Engine
From what we know so far, the 2024 VW Tiguan definitely won’t come in an all-electric variant. On the other hand, other forms of electrification are possible, especially when it comes to a mild-hybrid setup, which could be offered in base variants. The current generation comes with just one engine in North America, with a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 184 horsepower, which doesn’t feel particularly impressive, whether it’s about driving dynamics or fuel efficiency. So, a 48-volt system would definitely have a good impact on the overall driving experience.
Some sources also suggest a more powerful version of this engine, which powers the Audi Q3, with a max output of 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Finally, there are rumors about a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Such a version has been available in other parts of the world, but the new system could arrive in North America as well.
As we’ve just mentioned, the current generation’s engine doesn’t impress, not just in terms of performance but also in terms f fuel economy. At best, it returns 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while AWD models are even thirstier. Those are subpar ratings for the segment, so we hope that the next generation could bring some improvements in this aspect.
2024 VW Tiguan Release Date and Price
We believe that the 2024 VW Tiguan could hit the market in the second half of the year, with a starting price of around 28.500 dollars. Of course, the competition will remain the same, in the form of models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape etc.
