Engines and performances of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The newest 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS will most likely return with the same engine options as the current model. And there are three engines available depending on a trim level. However, we might also see some upgrades on this front.

So, the base GLS 450 will be powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 twin-turbocharged engine. This unit is able to deliver 362 horsepower and the torque of 369 pound-feet. It works with a 9-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with all-wheel drive configuration. Moreover, this engine gets 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

The next is a 4.7-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged unit which powers the GLC 550. This engine is able to put out 449 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque. It also pairs with a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive as standard. As for the fuel economy, it is rated at 14/19 mpg in the city/highway drive.

The most powerful unit is a 5.5-liter V-8 twin-turbo which is found in the GLS 63 AMG. This unit is able to produce 577 horsepower and it is coupled to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. However, the latest news claims that eventually this unit will be replaced by a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo which is even more powerful. It has the output of 603 horses and 664 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic and the 4Matic all-wheel drive layout is standard.

On the other hand, according to some speculations, the new GLS might get a mild electrification meaning that this time it could receive a plug-in hybrid engine which will combine an inline-6 and an electric motor. The V-8 unit could also appear with a hybrid technology. Furthermore, 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive layout will generally be standard on most versions.

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS exterior design

The newest 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS has been caught during its testing and it has been fully covered which lead us to conclude that it will definitively differ from its forerunner. At first glance, it seems that the upcoming GLS will be slightly larger and longer than the current model. As well, the headlamps will probably be revised and will feature a more rectangular design. The grille will be refreshed too and we can expect a different design of the rear doors. It will ride on the 21-inch wheels while the AMG version will feature a new design of 21-inch wheels.

On the other hand, the GLS AMG version will look different from the regular model. The front end will feature the Panamericana grille which is also found on the other AMG models. The bumper now looks more aggressive than the standard version and there are larger intakes and more muscular elements all over the body. We can also expect a different design of the wheels and the quad exhaust outlets which appear more aggressive.

Three passengers can occupy the second row although it will be much more convenient for two. As well, the third row is also ample and can carry even taller occupants without any discomfort.

But the second row can be folded down also if needed the room of even 93.8 cubic feet. Furthermore, on the center of the dashboard, there is a standard 8.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment system.
