The American manufacturer will soon reveal its all-new three-row SUV which will enter the market as the 2020 Ford Expedition. The newest Ford will be available in two versions among which the one is called the Expedition Max, the extended-version model. The 2020 model year should get some small visual changes while the interior will be upgraded with more features. Alongside the base engine, the newest Expedition should also get a hybrid engine or a plug-in hybrid.
2020 Ford Expedition powertrain and performance
The 2020 Ford Expedition will return with the same engine which powers the outgoing model. It is a familiar 3.5-liter V-6 twin-turbocharged engine. This unit is able to make 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. However, in the Platinum model, the powertrain will be stronger. And it is capable of making 400 hp and the torque of 480 lb-ft. It will be coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission and will be available with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.
As for the fuel economy, connected to rear-wheel drive system, it will get 17 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg combined. The all-wheel drive system will be rated at 17/22/19 mpg in the city/highway/combined. Furthermore, the extended-wheelbase Expedition Max model is estimated to be 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined with RWD layout. The all-wheel drive Max model will get 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined. The Expedition will be able to tow up to 9,300 pounds.
On the other hand, the latest new has confirmed that the Ford manufacturer will expand its lineup with some new and more efficient engines. And those will include hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. So, it is very likely that the 2020 Ford Expedition will use one of these engines. But at the moment, there aren’t any precise details and information. So, we will have to wait for the carmaker’s official announcement.
The exterior design of the 2020 Ford Expedition
Visually, the Ford Expedition looks like a larger version of the smaller Ford Explorer and Flex models. It is bold but at the same time sophisticated and elegant. The front end wears a large grille and well-known C-shaped headlamps. Moving to the rear end of the vehicle, there are simple taillights equipped with LED lighting and a chrome strip with EXPEDITION letters. The base model will ride on the 18-inch wheels; while the larger 20-inchers will be offered in the higher trim levels. However, the 22-inch wheels will be optional. There is also the Expedition Max model which will feature a longer wheelbase which will improve cargo space. Furthermore, the 2020 Ford Expedition might get some small adjustments of the front fascia with revised grille and bumper. As well, the manufacturer might also offer some new exterior colors or new design of the wheels.
Interior
Inside, the 2020 Ford Expedition is very spacious and comes with three rows of seats. All the seats are cozy and offer plenty of room, even for the third-row passengers. The Expedition Max is even larger than the base model so it is roomier and offers more cargo space. The second row is available with either bench seat or captain’s chairs. The cargo space with all seats up measures 20.9 cubic feet. And the Expedition Max has the room of 36 cubic feet. Behind the third row, there is a room of 63.6 cubes in the standard model while the Max model has the room of 79.6 cubic feet. Furthermore, the maximum cargo space is 104.6 cubes and Max has the room of 121.5 cubic feet.
Equipment of the 2020 Ford Expedition
The 2020 Ford Expedition is available in several trim levels. The base model will come with a power driver seat, power features, cruise control, 18-inch wheels, an AM/FM/satellite/CD audio system with 9 speakers, USB ports, a power-folding third-row seat, etc. The Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking will be available too. The optional features will include an 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, 10-way power front seats, keyless ignition, heated and cooled front seats, a power handsfree tailgate, and blind-spot monitors will also be available.
Furthermore, the Limited model will add 20-inch wheels, leather seats, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, blind-spot monitors, heated and cooled 10-way power front seats, a rear-seat entertainment system, and so on. The options are navigation, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, LED headlights, 22-inch wheels, automatic park assist, and a panoramic sunroof. The Platinum will get a surround-view camera, while the leather second-row captain’s chairs and power-fold second-row bench seats will be optional.
Release date and pricing
The new 2020 Ford Expedition is expected to hit the market next year, probably at the end of 2019. The price will most likely stay close to the price of the current model which begins at around $49,500.
