The Japanese manufacturer already presented the updated version of the legendary wagon for the 2023 model year but many experts believe there are many more things to come with this update. Besides a typical refresh, which includes a couple of styling changes and a few interior novelties, we could also see the 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid. Allegedly, the company is finishing the development, which should bring a completely new powertrain, with respectable performance and excellent fuel economy. The officials are still quiet on this matter.
Without any doubt, such a powertrain would definitely make this wagon even more desirable, especially considering the current gas prices. On the other hand, we are pretty sure that the rest of the design would be the same as in standard gasoline-powered models, which means that you may count on a capable and versatile vehicle, which is practical, efficient and well-equipped.
The 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid could arrive already by the end of this year.
2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid Powertrain
Of course, the most important aspect of this version would be the powertrain. Most sources suggest that the 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid would come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Allegedly, that system would be based on a 1.8-liter turbo-four engine, which features a max output of 175 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. We presume that the engine would come paired with a couple of electric motors, so the max output would actually be much higher. Our rough estimation would go around 250 horsepower.
Naturally, such a system would also include a decently-sized battery pack, which would provide a decent all-electric range.
On the other hand, the rest of the lineup will continue in the same way. The Outback will carry on with two familiar gasoline units on offer. Base models will continue with a good-old 2.5-liter flat-four, which puts out around 182 horsepower. On the other hand, higher trim levels would come with a way more capable 2.4-liter turbo-flat-four, which puts out around 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come with a CVT, as well as with the company’s well-known AWD system.
At this point, it’s still early to talk about the fuel economy of the new 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid. Still, we have no doubt that this version would be way more efficient than gasoline models, which are already pretty good in this aspect when compared to rivals. For reference, the base naturally-aspirated engine returns around 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is pretty impressive if we consider the standard all-wheel drive. The turbo-four is also pretty good in this aspect, as it returns around 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid Design
Just like the rest of the lineup, the 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid would also come with all the novelties that were recently introduced with the 2023 facelift. This update was mostly in terms of aesthetics, so you can notice changes in several areas, particularly at the front. You can notice a new, bigger grille, along with new headlights, new bumper etc. Of course, there are also things like new wheels and color options. Finally, we are pretty sure that this particular version would also come with a couple of exclusive details, which would accentuate its performance character.
On the other hand, the mechanical aspect of the vehicle hasn’t changed with this update. The overall layout is still the same, based on the Legacy sedan, with a classic wagon body and raised ground clearance. The Outback is easy to drive, with a high level of comfort and pretty engaging handling.
The same thing is with interior design. We don’t believe that the 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid could come with bigger changes in this aspect, although we could see minor updates, such as a different instrument cluster and similar things. The rest of the design would remain pretty much the same, starting from the same, pretty attractive dashboard design, with quality materials and good build quality, as well as with lots of tech and convenience features.
Still, the main thing about this cabin is its functionality and comfort. There are two pretty generous rows of seats, which accommodate five adult passengers with ease. Also, the cargo area is pretty generous, as it offers around 32.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 75.7 cubic feet of the total cargo volume. That’s pretty similar to the Forester compact crossover.
2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid Release Date and Price
Many believe that the 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid would arrive by the end of this year. However, the officials are still quiet, so we should take this with big reserve. If it arrives, we presume that the price would go around 45.000 dollars.
