In the world of off-road enthusiasts, Jimmy is a pretty familiar name, which was used for a less familiar twin of the legendary K5 Blazer. It was a pretty capable off-roader back in the day, so it’s a real shame that GMC doesn’t have something similar in its offer these days. However, that could change pretty soon, considering that some sources are suggesting that the GMC management is seriously considering the comeback of this nameplate. Some of them even suggest that the new model is already in development and that it could arrive already in the next year, like the 2023 GMC Jimmy.
That model would share most of its parts with the GMC Canyon, rumors suggest. The mid-size pickup is about to receive a full redesign soon, so this seems like a perfect opportunity to introduce an SUV iteration, which would share a lot of parts but which would also come with lots of exclusive design and technical solutions.
2023 GMC Jimmy Design
As we’ve just mentioned, that revived 2023 GMC Jimmy would share most of its part with the GMC Canyon. So, we would see a genuine SUV design, with a body-on-frame platform, which would ensure impressive rigidity and excellent off-road potential. Of course, most of the mechanics would be shared, while the suspension setup would probably feature a couple of upgrades, which would ensure a better on-road ride, with improved comfort and overall experience.
When it comes to the exterior design, we would expect to see a typical SUV shape, though some sources suggest a two-door layout, in the manner of the original model. Still, we are not sure how such a design would work in today’s market. Instead, we expect to see a typical 4-door SUV design, with aesthetics that closely follow the brand’s latest design language. That particularly refers to the front end, which should take a lot of inspiration from models like Sierra, Yukon etc.
Interior
The 2023 GMC Jimmy would be a mid-size SUV but we don’t believe it would come with three rows of seats. Instead, we would see short overhangs that would ensure high off-road potential. Therefore, the seating capacity would go down to five, but both rows would be able to accommodate adults with ease. Due to the boxy shape and large overall dimensions, we expect that the cargo area would also be pretty big, with competitive numbers for the segment.
Of course, we would expect to see a modern and attractive cabin layout. The dashboard may feature the same design as the one in the upcoming Canyon, though wouldn’t be surprised if we see a couple of upgrades, in terms of nicer materials and a few extra features. Speaking of the features, we expect that the new model would come with lots of modern tech goodies, such as the GM’s latest infotainment system with a massive screen, digital instrument cluster and a full load of driver-assistance and convenience features.
2023 GMC Jimmy Engine
When it comes to the powertrain, we don’t expect surprises. This aspect will be the same as in the next-generation Canyon and we already know that the new pickup will replace the current engines with just one unit. That unit is a 2.7-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. We would also expect to see a new 10-speed automatic transmission installed.
Most likely, base models would come with RWD only, while 4WD would be available. Various off-road upgrades would be available as well, starting from the locking differential, two-speed transfer case, skid plates, suspension upgrades etc.
Fuel Consumption
This SUV is still just a rumor and we still don’t know if it’s even in development or not. Therefore, it’s hard to talk about fuel consumption at this moment, even though we know the powertrain and expected size and weight. So, the only thing we could do is to make a rough estimation, which would go around 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The 2023 GMC Jimmy is still just a rumor but if we can trust these reports, we could see it already in the next year. We estimate that the base model would cost somewhere between 35.000 and 40.000 dollars. Key competitors would be models like Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Ford Bronco etc.
