Two decades ago, the Blue Oval company did a pretty interesting experiment. We saw an SUV based on a heavy-duty pickup, which is really hard to imagine these days when more and more SUVs are switching to a body-on-frame platform. However, there is still a group of traditionally-oriented buyers who highly appreciate the classic design. They believe that Ford could do such an experiment once again. According to o some rumors, the company is already working on such a vehicle, which could arrive already in the next year, as the 2023 Ford Excursion.
The officials are still quiet on this matter but we definitely know what to expect from the revived Excursion, if the company is about to bring it back. We would expect to see the same base approach, though in a modern suit, with the latest features and design solutions. The new SUV would also come with massive V8 engines under the hood.
2023 Ford Excursion Design
If you remember the original Excursion, you know very well that the base design was based on the F-250 pickup truck. We presume that the same case would be with the new iteration. The 2023 Ford Excursion would ride on the same platform and share a lot of parts. This refers to many things, including the suspension setup, which should be quite similar. So, instead of Expedition’s independent rear suspension, the Excursion would feature a solid axle. This means that the ride quality wouldn’t be so smooth but on the other hand, the payload and towing capabilities would be at a much higher level.
Of course, the new 2023 Ford Excursion would ride on the latest version of Ford’s platform that utilizes lightweight materials like aluminum and HSS. In that way, it will be significantly lighter than the original model, which will certainly have an impact on performance and fuel economy.
In the case of Excursion, size is certainly the first thing that comes to mind. This is the biggest SUV Ford has ever made and we presume that the new iteration could get even bigger. For comparison, the original model features around 137.1 inches in wheelbase. That is just three inches more than the current generation of Suburban and Yukon XL. Therefore, there’s a big chance to see the 2023 Ford Excursion with an even longer wheelbase, maybe even with full 140 inches between the axles.
In terms of the styling, we count on a typical wagon-like layout, with a long boxy body and aesthetical solutions that closely resemble the pickup styling. This primarily refers to the front end, which would look largely the same. Of course, there is always plenty of room for exclusive styling details as well.
The same thing is with interior design. We expect to see the same dashboard layout as the aforementioned pickup. That means a lot of truckish lines and cubby shapes, in a combination with modern features. Speaking of the modern features, we count on the same vertically-oriented infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster etc. Still, we expect some differences, particularly in terms of the materials. This SUV should feature a little bit nicer materials, though we don’t expect to see significant upgrades in this aspect.
The main thing about the 2023 Ford Excursion would be the amount of passenger space. With that size, the new SUV would feature three spacious rows of seats, all capable of accommodating adult passengers with ease. The cargo area should also offer impressive numbers too. We believe that the overall volume would go way over 150 cubic feet.
2023 Ford Excursion Engines
This aspect shouldn’t bring surprises. So, we presume we will see three familiar units on the offer, starting from the 6.2-liter V8. It puts out around 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. We also count on the newer 7.3-liter V8, codenamed Godzilla, which features a max output of 430 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.
We would also love to see a diesel version of the pickup, with that monstrous 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel. That engine puts out around 475 horsepower and 1.050 pound-feet of torque. Of course, this version would be the most capable in terms of towing capacity, but should also provide decent fuel economy.
We still can’t talk about more precise numbers but we presume that the average fuel economy could be similar to the F-250 pickup. So, the base 6.2-liter V8 should be able to return around 15 mpg combined. The 7.3-liter unit would drop mpg ratings by 1 mpg. On the other hand, the diesel version, even though the most capable, would be the most efficient. We presume it would go around 20 mpg combined.
2023 Ford Excursion Release Date and Price
Although the officials are still quiet, we believe that the new 2023 Ford Excursion could arrive already in the next year. Also, we estimate that the base models would go around 65-70.000 dollars.
