The new 2022 Toyota Highlander, also known as Kluger, is arriving, and it might introduce some updates and changes for the next year. If you didn’t know, this model is Toyota’s first mid-size SUV, built on the same platform as the popular Camry sedan.
Generally, Highlander is attractive and is one of the best selling models after the truck-based mid-size Toyota 4Runner. In Japan, this SUV is known as Kluger and is a larger alternative than the Toyota RAV4. Basically, it shares plenty of cues with it, and it comes with a more aggressive-looking body built.
2022 Toyota Highlander Exterior Updates
The next-generation 2022 Toyota Highlander should feature the same bold design built as the new-generation RAV4. However, it will grow a couple of inches in wheelbase and overall length. Thanks to that, it should bring more room inside, contributing to smoother ride quality.
Basically, Highlander will continue to housing the same front fascia with a recognized grille and a new pair of LED headlights. Moreover, like before, the lower trims rolls on the 18-inch alloy wheels, while 20-inch comes with XSE, Limited, and Platinum models. Generally, we can expect the 2022 Highlander to retain the same design on the back.
More Standard Equipment
Inside, the new 2022 Toyota Highlander will feature more standard equipment than the outgoing model. Generally, the current Highlander is well-equipped across the entire lineup. The entry-level L trim features standard cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and more.
However, more equipment and more premium features, buyers can get optionally. Basically, one can get a much bigger 12.3-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, JBL audio system, and more. XSE is the favorite trim and is available with a two-tone color scheme.
The upcoming Highlander in cross all the trims will feature Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 array of driver aids. It comes with a forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and Lane Tracing Assist.
2022 Toyota Highlander Powertrain Options
In the engine department, the forthcoming 2022 Toyota Highlander will be a carryover model. That means we could once again see the same 3.5-liter V6 engine that pumps out 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque.
However, it’s unclear if the new model will be offered with the same eight-speed automatic transmission or a CVT. As standard, the Highlander comes with front-wheel drive, while the all-wheel-drive system is optional.
The new Toyota Highlander will also be available with a hybrid powertrain. This version consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors. Combined, they produce 243 horsepower using continuously variable automatic transmission as standard.
2022 Toyota Highlander Release Date and Price
There is no official release date for the 2022 Toyota Highlander. Based on previous schedules, we think that it might be introduced in the summer of 2021.
Unlike the release date, we collected some information about its pricing. It’s most likely the 2022 Highlander will remain close to the current price. This SUV starts a little less than $36,000 for the base model and can pass a $50,090 mark on the upper trims. The new three-row SUV will continue to compete in the same category with the model’s Chevy Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Honda Pilot.
