2024 Kia Sorento Preview, Facelift, PHEV, Release Date, Hybrid, Interior

The current, fourth generation of Kia’s three-row crossover has been around since 2021 and it looks like the Korean manufacturer is working on a mid-cycle update. That’s what the latest reports suggest, not just with rumors but with several digital renderings as well. We presume this would be a typical mid-cycle refresh, with aesthetic changes in mind. Such a scenario makes perfect sense, considering that the Korean carmaker practices quick updates and redesign. The 2024 Kia Sorento would represent the fourth production, which seems like perfect timing for such an update.

Other than visual updates, we don’t expect to see more important changes. Therefore, the overall layout should remain the same. The Sorento will continue to deliver a lot of great things, starting from a broad range of powertrain options, great interior quality, lots of standard equipment and a smooth ride.

Despite the potential updates, we expect that the 2024 Kia Sorento won’t arrive much earlier than usual, but rather within the second half of 2023.

2024 Kia Sorento Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Kia Sorento is expected to receive a mid-cycle update. We presume that the focus will be on aesthetics and digital renderings suggest the same thing. On these renderings, we can see that most of the changes would happen at the front. This refers to things like new headlights, new grille, bumpers, etc. On the other hand, the overall shape would remain the same, while a few tweaks to the rear end are possible too. Of course, we would also expect to see things like new color options, new wheels, etc.

On the other hand, the mechanical aspect of the vehicle would remain the same, including the chassis and suspension setup. The Sorento offers responsive steering and minimal body lean. It’s on the firm side but still delivers a pretty smooth ride.

Interior

We believe that this mid-cycle refresh wouldn’t bring bigger changes to the inside. Simply, the current cabin already looks pretty amazing, way more upscale than you would expect from a vehicle in this price range. The materials are really nice, and the dashboard looks very elegant. It is complemented by a lot of tech features, which make the cabin look even nicer.

The current-generation Sorento is a halfway between compact and mid-size segment, similar to models like Santa Fe or Murano. However, unlike the competition, it comes standard with three rows of seats and accommodates seven passengers. You can also get a six-passenger version, with second-row captain’s chairs.

The front seats are well-shaped and offer good support and a lot of space. The second row is also pretty generous with space, and the third row is very tight. The cargo area isn’t particularly generous considering the relatively small dimensions for a mid-size crossover. You may count on about 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 38.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row, and 75.5 cubic feet of the total volume.

Features

This update would probably bring some changes in terms of standard equipment. We presume that some of the options would become standard, even though the current model is already pretty decent in this aspect. The current model comes standard with goodies like an 8-inch touch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, six USB ports, HD Radio, a six-speaker stereo, remote keyless entry etc.

Some of the current options could become part of the standard equipment, as we already mentioned. The current model offers upgrades like a 10.3-inch touch screen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, satellite radio, wireless device charging, a 120-volt household-style power outlet, two additional USB ports, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, a panoramic sunroof and rear sunshades.

2024 Kia Sorento Engine

We don’t believe that bigger changes could happen under the hood. So, base versions would continue with a 2.5-liter inline-four, which puts out around 191 horsepower. It comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and offers relatively decent overall performance. The optional turbo-four is a way better choice, as it offers 281 horsepower and significantly better driving dynamics. Also, it is equipped with a dual-clutch transmission.

Also, there are two familiar hybrid versions, both based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four. The standard, self-charging hybrid puts out around 226 horsepower. On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid is good for 261 horsepower and also offers around 30 miles of range in the EV mode.

Fuel Economy

The base four-cylinder engine returns around 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is good for a mid-size SUV. Although much more powerful, the turbo-four isn’t significantly thirstier. It is good for about 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

On the other hand, the hybrid returns around 39 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The PHEV offers similar ratings in hybrid mode but also features EV mode, where it’s good for about 79 mpg-e.

2024 Kia Sorento Release Date and Price

Despite the potential updates, we don’t believe that the 2024 Kia Sorento could arrive before the second half of 2021. The starting price should go around 32.000 dollars, while the key competition will be models like Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, Honda Passport etc.
