2020 VW Atlas: Changes, Arrival, Price, Specs

The new 2020 VW Atlas has been announced and this time it should get some minor changes. The engine options will remain the same and the exterior design could be slightly refreshed for a more modern look. The cabin could get some new color combinations and perhaps more optional features.

Powertrains and performances of the 2020 VW Atlas

The 2020 VW Atlas will return with two engine options beneath its hood. And the base is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine which is capable of making 235 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque. It will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and the front-wheel drive layout will be the only option. This engine will be rated at 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The next is a 3.6-liter V-6 engine which is able to deliver 276 hp and the torque of 266 pound-feet. It will also work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. However, it will get both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. Connected to front wheels, the engine will get 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drive model will be rated at 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The exterior and interior design of the 2020 VW Atlas

Visually, the 2020 VW Atlas is nicely sculpted and looks attractive and modern. The front end is dominated by the wide grille and a pair of boxy headlights. The pronounced wheel arches give it even more muscular appearance. The rear end of the vehicle will look more conventional and there will be boxy taillights with a chrome strip between them. The 18-inch alloy wheels will be standard while the 20-inch wheels will be optional and standard on the SEL Premium trim level.

The interior of the 2020 VW Atlas is simple, conventional, and well equipped. The Atlas is very spacious and has three rows of seats. It can place up to 7 passengers. However, with the optional second-row captain’s chairs, the seating reduces to six passengers. The base models will feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment while the higher trims will get the larger 8.0-inch touchscreen. Furthermore, the synthetic leather seats will be standard and the SEL Premium model will get real leather upholstery. Behind the third row, there is 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. And the maximum cargo area is 96.8 cubes.

Equipment

The standard equipment of the 2020 VW Atlas includes cloth seat, dual-zone climate control, roof rails, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB, audio system with 6 speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, six airbags, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a rearview camera, and automatic post-collision braking. The higher trims will add leather seats, hands-free power tailgate, heated rear seats, panoramic sunroof, lane-keeping and parking assistance, and an overhead-view camera.

Release date and price of the 2020 VW Atlas

Although it is not officially confirmed, the 2020 VW Atlas could hit the market in the end of this year, or at the beginning of the next. Its price should start at roughly $31,900.
