2019 VW Atlas: Release Date, Changes, Review

Although it has been all-new for 2018, the VW Atlas should also hit the market as the 2019 model year. However, the 2019 VW Atlas most likely won’t bring any major upgrades except the new five-seat version which should receive more aggressive design and less space inside the cabin.

Powertrain and performance of the 2019 VW Atlas

There won’t be any changes applied under the hood of the newest 2019 VW Atlas. And it will return with the same engine as the current model. So, the one option is a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbocharged engine which has the output of 235 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine works with an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes with front-wheel drive only. This engine is rated at 22 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined.

The second option is a 3.6-liter V-6 unit. This one is able to deliver 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. It also works with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. However, it is offered with front-wheel but also the all-wheel drive configurations. Speaking of the fuel economy, connected to front-wheel drive, this unit is estimated to be 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined. The all-wheel drive variant gets 17/23/19 mpg.

The Atlas SUV can tow up to 2,000 pounds. However, with the optional towing package which is offered for the SEL trim levels, it is rated at 5,000 pounds. Furthermore, new for the 2019 model year, is a five-seat version of this model, which will use the same engines as the standard seven-seat VW Atlas.

Design of exterior

The Volkswagen Atlas has been all-new for 2018 and the 2019 model year won’t get any significant changes. Compared to the other models in its class, the Atlas seems to be a bit smaller. But it definitively looks very attractive and stylish. On the front fascia, there is a wide grille with nicely sculpted LED headlamps. The rear end features more chrome accents between the taillights. The base model rides on the standard 18-inch aluminum wheels while the SEL Premium version uses the larger 20-inch rollers. As well, it comes with LED taillights as standard in the SEL Premium.

On the other hand, the 2019 VW Atlas five-seat version will represent a sportier version of this model. The front end will look more aggressive with more pronounced and larger air intakes. It will also be significantly shorter. The taillights should also get a different design so as the headlamps and the grille.

The interior design of the 2019 VW Atlas

The 2019 VW Atlas comes standard with three rows of seats and can carry up to seven passengers. The second-row captain’s chairs will be optional while the Atlas comes standard with the second-row bench. Front and the second-row seats are comfortable and provide sufficient space. However, the third row can accommodate mid-sized adults and kids without any discomfort. Both second and third row can be folded down for more cargo space. The seats are upholstered in cloth in the base S trim level while the SE and SEL versions come with leatherette. The real leather comes standard in the range-topping SEL premium model.

Furthermore, the interior of the five-seat version won’t differ much from the standard seven-seater, except space. However, it is expected to get a new design for the door panels and a rearrangement of the cup holders.
