In the large market of mid-size crossover SUVs, the Mazda CX-5 manages to stand out from the crown with its attractive styling, great driving dynamics, and excellent fuel efficiency. This model has been majorly redesigned as the 2017 model year, so the current, 2018 version has just gained a few more features in each trim level and the new cylinder deactivation for its familiar 2.5-liter unit. Therefore, the Touring model has received more safety equipment: the standard i-Activsense Package which also comes as an option in the Sport. And the Sport trim now comes standard with a rear cross-traffic detection and blind-spot monitoring. So, the upcoming 2019 Mazda CX-5 is also expected to arrive with no major changes and for the larger upgrades, we will have to wait a few more years, perhaps 2020 or 2021.
The 2019 version will arrive with the same 2.5-liter unit but this time, it might finally arrive with a diesel engine to the United States market. It should be offered in the same trim levels which include Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. All the versions are well-equipped and each year are getting more standard equipment which might be the case with the 2019 version too.
2019 Mazda CX-5 powertrain
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 will keep the familiar engine as its predecessor. It is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv gasoline engine with cylinder deactivation. This engine is able to produce 187 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with front-wheel drive. However, the all-wheel drive setup is also available. Furthermore, it is able to tow up to 2,000 pounds. With front-wheel drive, this unit gets 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel drive version is rated at 24/30 mpg.
On the other hand, the CX-5 also offers a diesel variant. And it is a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder powertrain which should also be offered in the United States.
Exterior and interior
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 won’t get any cosmetic changes this time since the 2017 model year has been refreshed for even more handsome and attractive styling. The front end features its well-known shield-shape prominent grille and narrow headlamps equipped with LED lights. The last year has added a new Soul Red Crystal color shade which gives it a classy appearance. It rides on standard 17-inch alloy wheels.
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 provides a premium looking interior which is loaded with a range of standard and optional features. It seats five and the cargo space offers a room of 31 cubic feet. On the center of the dashboard, there is a 7.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment system.
Speaking of the technology, the base model comes with LED headlights, cloth upholstery, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitors, power windows and locks, and automatic emergency braking. The Touring adds active lane control, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and full-speed automatic emergency braking. The Grand Touring also includes leather, a power passenger seat, and memory for the driver’s seat. However, the CX-5 will offer several optional packages also.
Release date and pricing
It is not yet confirmed, but the 2019 Mazda CX-5 should be presented sometime by the end of this year. We don’t expect some changes in the price which starts at around $25,000.
